Best thing to do is find a vintage soloist, but eBay has over-inflated their values. The next best options are to try a metal soloist (which Selmer still produces and WWBW sells.) I had a few SYOS Link inspired mouthpieces that I purchased at a good price, They were at best OK and not very inspirational to play. I was watching a video of Chad LB where he was using his SYOS signature mouthpiece and he sounded fabulous on it. The transposition is tough as well. The Alto Sax is in G. When it is three hours into a gig, some one requests a tune on the big flute on the stand, and you have had three or four Guinnesses, then tell me how well you can transpose a lead sheet into the key you need to be successful on Alto Sax. From a strictly tonal point of view, alto sax is closer to trumpet than tenor sax. From a playing point of view, tenor sax is the most flexible.
