An 80 grain charge will do about 1500 fps and will slow to a little more then 900. Fater charges won't buy you a lot down range.Cannon. The guns had a 1:60" twist, with a shallow .003" to .005" depth, and were specifically built to take big powder charges.Then, cock the gun to full cock. Slowly screw the little screw in until the rear trigger releases and the hammer falls. Now, unscrew the screw 1 (one) full turn. That is the recommended setup for a set trigger but if you want to adjust it so the front trigger needs to move more, unscrew the screw further.As far as stripping, most of the old bluing was badly worn and almost off. I used progressive papers, 400, 600, 1,000 and 1,500 grit. Degreased with Dawn dish soap and water, rinsed, dried and further degreased with acetone. Most frizzens today are made of 6150 steel which is an oil hardening steel, however it will never get hard enough with an oil quench, so you need to use water. I've never had any issues with a 6150 frizzen cracking in a water quench after tempering. The lock was assembled from a parts set sold by Doc Carlson at Upper Missouri Trading Co.So here goes---Hawkens 45 and 50 are 15/16. Hawkens 54 and larger 1 inch. Seneca 36 and 45 are 13/16. Renegades are 1 inch. But here is the real difference between the Hawken and the Seneca, the Seneca is a completely scaled down version of the Hawken. It looks tiny compared to a Hawken.One of the most wonderful stocks I had ever held in my hands. The barrel channel was 1 " and 37 " long . With no powder in the gun Trigger the action while observing for sparks. Assuming the flint is being held tightly so it doesn't move when it strikes the frizzen. Hornady's plain round balls are pure lead, generally speaking, although they do make .485 "hardballs" put up in blister packs with a little plastic sabot or cup for each ball. At the Hawken Classic, I went to his display and asked if he had either a 0.480 or a 0.485 to get a slightly smaller ball for my 50 caliber rifle to be used for the out of the pouch matches. He had a 0.482" mold. Now I have a 0.482 mold in my collection.The short barrel like 20 or 22 inches is cute but has lots of short comings in muzzle loaders. The old timers sorted out how long a barrel needed to be and as powder got better the barrel got shorter. Never had much luck with accuracy with the t/c maxi hunters. I bought the 3/8 and with a little judicious filing on them they fit the CVA dovetails. I didn't want to enlarge the dovetails in case I went back to the stock sights. The front & rear are the same size.I use the rear tang screw and if needed, drill and tap a new whole in the tang. Some of the TC rifle and some of the Pedersoli's come with a hole already there, but of not, do not panic, it's an easy 5 minute job to drill and tap a 6/32 or 8/32 hole. I have a couple of hundred or more 45 caliber conical bullets designed for paper patching. To accommodate for the patching, the actual bullet diameter is under .458, and varies somewhat depending on bullet weight, etc. Bullet weights vary from 450-550 grains.
