I was camping in Bahia Honda State Park for 1.5 weeks. A few days later, I entered Bahia Honda State Park after coming back from Horseshoe Beach, which is a Florida Keys shore snorkeling spot that’s a few minutes down the road. I saw that the road to Sandspur Beach no longer had a closed gate.
After a short drive north from Key West, we stopped at Bahia Honda State Park a couple days after Labor Day, and the beach was pretty empty. When you enter the park ($9 entry fee for 2 people), you have the option to turn left or right. We chose left, and found a near-empty beach, and spent a couple hours snorkeling.Bahia Honda State Park is the darkest location in the Florida Keys. Wander up the Old Bahia Honda bridge, walk along the shoreline, or sit back in a lounge chair at your campsite to take in the marvelous and magical sight of the nighttime sky. Fantastic trip to Looe Key on the Snorkel Express from Bahia Honda State Park. Capt Jim and Andrea were fabulous and took us quickly to the reef where we snorkeled for 1.5 hours. Lots of colorful fish in the reef, dolphin and reef shark sighting. We also saw a few sea turtles during the ride out.
