Rotate the key 90 degrees clockwise. Insert the SmartKey tool fully and firmly into the SmartKey hole. You may feel the tool click inside the lock. Remove the SmarKey tool. Remove the current key. Insert the new key you wish to use with the lock. Make sure your key is FULLY inserted. The edge of the key touches the indent in the cylinder face.Locate the program button, rotate the battery handle, and remove the battery. Step 3: Press hold on the button and inside the battery back. Step 4: In case of a Kwikset 917 and 955 you will need to use a paper clip or a pin to access the program button. Step 5: Wait for 20 to 30 seconds until you hear a beep or two.You do lose the original pinning, but you can easily reset the lock back to the original key as I did in the video. If you're at a lockout then you can reset it to any kwikset key and then reset it back to the original key once you have access to the original key, but everything remains in working order, so I doubt you could really call this "destructive".
